Heel Pain Treatment – Toronto Podiatrist What causes heel pain? One of the most common causes of heel pain is plantar fasciitis or heel spur syndrome.Other causes include gout, arthritis, broken heel bone, infection, foreign bodies (such as stepping on a needle). Your podiatrist can determine the exact cause of your heel pain. What is plantar fasciitis or heel spur syndrome? Plantar fasciitis is due to a tight tendon located under the arch and attached to the bottom of the heel. It has become strained and inflamed, often due to a lack of proper support, or due to an injury, or overuse. Over time, the tendon may begin to pull away from its attachment at the heel and a bone spur develops. Generally, the problem is not due to the heel spur, it is due to the inflamed tendon. How do I know if I have plantar fasciitis? Usually, you will experience pain at the bottom of the heel, particularly when getting out of bed in the morning or when starting to walk following a period of rest. It tends to feel better after a moderate amount of walking. It may not hurt during a workout but usually hurts more the next day following the workout. What can I do at home to relieve the pain of plantar fasciitis? Applying ice to the tender area for short periods may help. Also, try gentle calf stretches. Aspirin may relieve the inflammation. Elevating the heel by putting a soft pad in the shoe under your sore heel may help. Women may feel better in a shoe with a higher heel. What if my heel still

Laser Treatment for Foot Wounds – Podiatrist in Middlefield, CT There are three common kinds of leg and foot ulcers, defined by appearance, location and the way the borders and skin around the ulcer look. Venous Stasis ulcers are located below the knee and are primarily found on the inner part of the leg, just above the ankle. The base of a venous ulcer is usually red but it may also be covered with yellow fibrous tissue or there may be a green or yellow discharge if you have an infection. This kind of ulcer can drain a lot of fluid and you will notice that on your clothing. The borders of a venous ulcer are irregular and the skin around it is frequently discolored and swollen. It may even feel warm to the touch. The skin may appear shiny and tight, depending on how much swelling you have. It may also be discolored and look brown or purple. If you have had a history of swollen legs or chronic problems with varicose veins or blood clots in your lower legs you will have a tendency to get venous stasis ulceration. Arterial (ischemic) ulcers are usually on your heels, tips of your toes, between your toes where they rub against one another. They can also occur anywhere your bones protrude and rub against your socks or shoes. They can also occur in your nail bed if your toenail cuts into the skin or if you trim your nails too short of if you have had an ingrown toenail removed. The arterial or ischemic ulcer has a yellow, brown, gray, or blackened color and usually does not

Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis – Podiatrist in Middlefield, CT Heel pain is a common condition where you feel discomfort or pain when putting your weight on your heel. There are two different types of heel pain. The first is caused by over-use repetitive stress injury where you have soreness from too much impact on your heel or a specific area of your heel. This can be caused by shoes with heels that are too low for your feet, a sudden increase in activity or your heel’s fat pad may be thinned out due to other causes. Plantar fasciitis, a very common diagnosis of heel pain, which is a biomechancial problem caused by flat feet or over pronation. The plantar fascia is a wide band of tissue that runs along the bottom surface of your foot, from the heel through the midfoot and into the forefoot. Over-pronation can cause the plantar fascia in your foot to become excessively stretched and inflamed, resulting in pain in the heel and arch areas of the foot. Often the pain you experience will be worst first thing in the morning or after a prolonged period of rest. The pain will gradually ease as you get on with your day. Treating Heel Pain ——————————————————————————– To properly treat heel pain, you must absorb shock, provide cushioning and elevate your heel to transfer the pressure that causes the pain. Fungal Nails Fungal infection of the nail, or onychomycosis, is often ignored because the infection can be present for years without causing any pain. The disease is characterized by a progressive change in a toenail’s quality and color, which is often ugly and embarrassing. In reality, the condition is an infection underneath the surface of the nail caused by fungi. When the tiny organisms take hold, the nail often becomes darker in color and foul smelling. Debris may collect beneath the nail plate, white marks frequently appear on the nail plate, and the infection is capable of spreading to other toenails, the skin, or even the fingernails. If ignored, the infection can spread and possibly impair one’s ability to work or even walk. This happens because the resulting thicker nails are difficult to trim and make walking painful when wearing shoes. Onychomycosis can also be accompanied by a secondary bacterial or yeast infection in or about the nail plate. Because it is difficult to avoid contact with microscopic organisms like fungi, the toenails are especially vulnerable around damp areas where people are likely to be walking barefoot, such as swimming pools, locker rooms, and showers, for example. Injury to the nail bed may make it more susceptible to all types of infection, including fungal infection. Those who suffer from chronic diseases, such as diabetes, circulatory problems, or immune-deficiency conditions, are especially prone to fungal nails. Other contributing
