Both of my big toenails look slightly yellow and are, indeed, a bit flaky. I thought that it was discoloration from lots of nail polish without basecoat and my lack of calcium, but I also have bits of “gunk” or debris that collect under the nail and smell. Is this normal or does this seem like a fungus?

That’s a nail fungus. I had it on 4 of my toenails. Terbinafine worked but it took a long time. It’s only available on prescription. You take one tablet per day. You should have a liver function test first as it can cause problems in a very small group of patients. There are some alternative remedies to try: I’ve heard that teatree oil can sometimes be effective, and I’ve also heard that smearing on Vicks vaporub can cure it. Whichever you choose, it will require patience.

Probably a fungus. Go to your doctor and ask about it. It’s better to get it checked out now than to wait until it’s gotten much worse.

It sounds like fungus to me.
